Who is me?
In 2007 I decided to form my own band to canalize all the musical knowlegde from different styles within a jazz context. For this project I got 3 of my favourite musicians together and named the new band “Zub” (after a mountain in Serbia, “Babin Zub”) In 2009 we made our first cd for Jazzshop records called “Keep on smilin’ spicy”. Who was me?
From the age of 16 untill now I have been playing in many big bands. Doing so, I got to play with many artist such as; Toots Thielemans, James Morrison, Roger Ingram (Ray Charles/Harry Connick), Karin Bloemen, Denise Jannah, Benny Bailey, Ferdinand Povel, Simone Roerade and Barry Harris, Eric Vloeimans, Lils Mackintosh, Babette van Veen. Peter King, Eric Miyashiro (Buddy Rich) Lee Thornburg (Tower of Power), Laura Fygi, Donna Lynton Lilian Day Jackson and Jeroen van der Boom.
I also performed/recorded with Pia Douwes, Thijs van Leer, Lee Towers, Scott Hamilton, Fay Claassen. Ack van Rooyen and Oscar Harris among others and made stage appearances in Ethiopia, Great Brittan, New York, Brazil and Egypt. I also did many soul/funk gigs such as with the band Cosy in Belgium and Blues gigs with Nicko Christiansen.
I started playing guitar at the age of 8 when I got my first guitar lesson from a local blues musician. I still feel blues are kind of my roots, but in an awkward way. Also my very first payed gig was with Lou Leeuw, the ex bassplayer off Cuby and the Blizzards.
I started having classical lessons at 13 wich got more and more serious. That was very usefull for playing Brazilian music, many years later. After classical and Jazz lessons and playing in local punk/blues bands I moved from Groningen to The Hague to study jazz-guitar.
At the Royal conservatory there, I studied with Eef Albers and Peter Nieuwerf, and occasional teachers such as Tal Farlow and John Abercrombie, besides that I also had lessons with Phillip Catherine.
After finishing my formal studies I studied in New York with David Gilmore and some years later in Brazil with Ricardo Silveira among others.
